graduate school
the whittier studio building is an annex of the minne apolisco llegeo fartandde sign campus.
each of these four galleries roughly illustrates one of the four respective semesters i spent there in questioning.
i went back to school for the experience of dedicated studio time, and studio time is what i got.
peers and mentors, and studio time. critiques and reading, and studio time. writing, beer drinking, more writing, and studio time.
needless to say i covered a lot of various materials with various marks. i ran things through the sewing machine that i perhaps should not have, i said things that no doubt sounded absurd, and equally i began to find the relevance of making sense. eagerly, i met all sorts of unexpected surprises.
while questioning my motivation, challenging my justifications, and searching for this relevance, i remained committed to representing the figure. by and by, i simplified and articulated the obvious: my inquiry is driven by looking for emotion in faces, and interrogating the cultural/personal significance of physical gestures.
ultimately i left with still more questions to ask, and many, many treasured answers.
